Pre-Surgical Rehabilitation

Prior to surgical intervention, your surgical team may require or recommend prehabilitation (prehab). When it comes to surgical procedures, patients may be intimidated by the possibility of functional decline and discomfort. Such thoughts may be harmful to the patient’s quality of life and progression while recovering. Prehabilitation is recommended in order to negate patients fears as well as target any issues with mobility and weakness prior to surgical intervention. Patients will also be educated on their surgical procedure and provided clinical pearls to make their rehabilitation as smooth as possible.

Benefits of Prehabilitation:

  • Reassurance prior to surgery
  • Education prior to surgery
  • Ability to ask questions regarding surgical technique and recovery
  • Instruction on exercise routines that will be performed post- surgical
  • Increased muscle memory
  • Improved recovery time following surgery

The prehab process can often include routines such as the following:

  • Aerobic exercise
  • Strength training
  • Functional task training
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Increasing endurance
  • Personalized treatment for individual needs
